What does Pope Francis’ think about apologetics? He has certainly condemned “proselytism” which is an aggressive form of transmitting the faith that directly contradicts St. Peter’s inspired words:
“Always be prepared to make a defense [apologia] to any one who calls you to account for the hope that is in you, yet do it with gentleness and reverence” (1 Peter 3:15)
This past summer, Pope Francis said in an interview with an Argentinian newspaper:
“…the worst thing of all is religious prosyletism, which paralyzes…The Church grows by attraction, not by prosyletism.”
Some people have interpreted past remarks made by the Holy Father as condemning apologetics in general. But is this really what he is saying? By condemning prosyletism, has he also condemned the gentle and reverent defense of the Catholic faith? Catholic apologist Jimmy Akin tackled this question last March.
