When I first heard Trent Horn in the apologetics hot seat a few years ago I was immediately struck by several things:
First, I noticed his impressive ability to remain calm in the face of tough objections—and objectors.
Second, I noticed that he was a great listener, indicated especially by his ability to repeat the objection back to the objector before responding.
Third, I noticed his adeptness at disarming his interlocutors and putting them at ease by finding points of agreement.
Fourth, I noticed that he was constantly putting the ball in the other person’s court using the Socratic Method.
Fifth, I noticed he was using a systematic approach—a calculated method of apologetics.
Indeed Trent Horn, by possessing these qualities as an apologist, has given the Church in himself one more model (and teacher) of effective charity-infused apologetics; and that is why I am excited about his newest DVD, The Three Secrets To Sharing The Faith: How to Talk About Catholicism To Anyone from Catholic Answers Press.
In my conversations with Trent it has been strikingly clear that he possesses a genuine passion for equipping Catholics to evangelize—and evangelize well (indicative also by his recently released apologetics reading list). He has found a method of doing apologetics and he has a tremendous desire to get it out there to assist others in their daily missionary efforts.
You’ve probably heard it said that if you want to be the best you ought to try to learn from the best. Well it could also be said that if you want to evangelize and do apologetics like Trent Horn, then the best person to learn from is, well, Trent Horn. The Three Secrets To Sharing The Faith is a great place to start.
The Three Secrets to Sharing The Faith moves along at an easy pace and is engaging from beginning to end, transitioning between focused teaching points and real-life video recordings of Trent evangelizing and debating with non-Catholics.
The viewer sees Trent practice what he preaches—and sees the fruits that come of it. There are few people in the Church today that have been more engaged on the front lines of Catholic apologetics, be it in the forums of life issues, atheism, or Protestantism, and his experience shines through his instruction and in the real life examples.
That’s the kicker: this DVD goes where no book on evangelization and apologetics can go. It offers theory and puts that theory into practice in live scenarios. And these days it is true that although not everyone is reader—everyone is a viewer. That’s why every parish needs to get this DVD and use it for the training of its parishioners, young and old. It’s good, it’s concise, it’s interesting, and it’s on screen—perfect for every regular Joe Catholic (youth leaders and catechists take note!) .
That it’s best to learn from the best is not always true. Some people are good at what they do—they’re just not good at explaining how they do it. But this is not the case with Trent Horn. He shows his chops in The Three Secrets To Sharing The Faith but not without revealing his authentic desire to win souls for Christ and equip his brothers and sisters in the faith to do the same. In his words, “We’re out to destroy arguments and win people to Christ.” Amen.
(P.S. I bet you’re wondering why I didn’t explicitly reveal the “Three Secrets” in this review. Well, the answer is simple: because they’re secrets. You’ll have to get the DVD to find out!)
